This was our fourth year hosting this GPR event and when I got up Wednesday morning there was an "Oh no" moment as the sky was dark and the roads wet. A dour beginning for a motorcycle Show-n-Shine but after some coffee and a look at the weather radar everything looked better and sure enough, not another drop of rain fell and by 11AM the sun was out and a beautiful day began.
Ed Vaillancourt was the first arrival, in 4 wheels rather than on his usual two. Ed opened the van doors and there were two striking and finely restored '50s NSU singles, a 250 SuperMax and a 125 SuperFox. I was a little uneasy helping with getting them out and around to the back lawn but managed not to distinguish myself with a clumsy gaff and the afternoon began.
When the BBQ began around 4:30 there were 6 or 7 vintage bikes on the back lawn and a dozen or more out front. A number of riders opted to drive as the weather wasn't the best where they were coming in from and others from further away chose prudence over suffering and couldn't make it.
Overall, it was a great afternoon with over 30 enjoying the meal and more who had to leave early or arrived late. We'd included a 50/50 ticket in the event price and Richard Freeman won that AGAIN. No aspersions can be cast however as it was my grand-niece Mackenzie who pulled the winning ticket from the jar.
There were at least 10 folks who'd planned to ride in but couldn't. We'd planned for three prizes for the vintage bikes but with the lower number on the lawn we kept it to one, taken by Ed Vaillancourt for his pair of beauties. The prize was a framed print of a notable piece of mechanical history.
The meal went well with no day-after reports of discomfort, though I did forget to put out three salads until the 11th hour.
My thanks to Paul Stoesser for the last two pictures below and to my wife Cheryl who kept track of everything and managed getting all the food and cutlery out and keeping the place presentable.
Thanks to everyone who came out and made a great afternoon out of the day.
Cheers, and hope to do it again next year.
