1956 Triumph TRW recommissioning

    Dear fellow enthusiasts,

I am getting this 1956 Triumph TRW ready for road. This is a points ignition model with 12 volt conversion. Here are few observations and questions with photos.

    1. What spark plugs are best? Currently it has a set of NGK B6HS.

    2. The ignition switch has 3 position: IGN, Center, and EMG. What is the function of EMG position? I noticed turning to EMG position made massive current running through the wiring. It almost burned the connecting wires to the battery.

    3. The bike started but ran rough. I checked the spark plugs and only the left cylinder seems to be firing. As the photo shows, the right plug seems to be almost new. Both plugs product nice spark when engine is turned. So it appears there is either no compression in right cylinder or a stuck valve. Any other thoughts?

    I appreciate your help.

The NGK B6HS are the correct plugs.

The "EMG" selection on the switch is to be used when the battery is dead to start the engine, then you immediately turn switch to the "IGN" position. The "EMG" position connects the output of the alternator directly to the coils . If you run in the "EMG" position to long things will get hot,the manual says you need to connect the battery negative terminal to an earth point on the machine. In this position the bike should be used for "short" jouneys only"

Also if you don't have the manuals I could get copies made at Staples .I have a copy of the 1956 "Technical Handbook" and the "Parts List"

I could send them to you at cost plus postage.

    Cheers

    John
